A Pre-School Test For You
Which way is the bus below traveling?
To the left or to the right?
Can't make up your mind?
Look carefully at the picture again.
Still don't know?
Pre-schoolers all over the United States were shown this picture asked the same question.
90% of the pre-schooler's gave this answer: "The bus is traveling to the left."
When asked, "Why do you think the bus is traveling to the left?"
They answered:
"Because you can't see the door to get on the bus."
How do you feel now?
I know, me too.

-r-: I thought so too!
floydcraig: Welcome to my blog, and thanks for the great review!
So far I can't confirm that any group or institution acknowledges using this "test." Can you document that such use exists?
anonymous: OMG!!! This is a joke, as the label says...
jeez, anonymous getting a bit serious there!!
I thought it was going right, but thats because thats the direction that writing goes, so thats the way it seemed to be facing on a writing based forum. And in the UK thats right cuz the doors are on the other side.
woo!
pigeon: Good for you chuck!
I tried this "test" with my pre-school class. About half said left, and half said right. None of them realized that the door was on the other side of the bus. The "test" is just someone's way of making a person feel stupid.
i just tried this with my four and a half year old and while me, my husband, and my older children could not figure it out my 4 1/2 year old got it right when we called her over to take a look. sure enough when asked how she knows, she replied "cause I smart", which was not the specific answer i was looking for. i then asked her if there was something that made her know the answer when she looked at the bus and she then got more specific and said "there's no door on that side". Pretty interesting, especially considering she does not ride a school bus or even attend school yet, but just sees them occasionally while we are out driving. this was truly interesting and a total surprise that so many preschool minds can come up with one answer while adults don't have a clue. i literally was trying to see if the wheels were closer to the left or the right and all kinds of other things, but never once did i think about the door!
