One for the money...

A while back I joined a few groups. I wanted to promote my blog or at least be on some sites where it could happen. Nothing much came of it. Maybe lately there’s a little more traffic coming from there, but I'm not that sure...

I realised, while reading different threads that many people actually blog for money. Really? I knew that some did make a living as bloggers, but not “that” many. Or so I thought. Often when surfing the blogoshpere I get hit by an ugly reality that some blogs are basically nothing else but a clutter of advertisement. It’s sickening. The look of their blogs is uuugly to say the least, with all those ads and they basically have very little content because the ads take up so much space. But they’re hoping to make the big bucks. Which brings us to the “hit” issue.

How many hits do you get/day? You see, for me the comments I get are more important than the hits. I may be wrong in thinking this way, but I feel that with each comment I get, I create a link of some sort with the reader, and I like that idea. I used to look at my stats almost daily, now I barely look at them. True, I wish I could expand my circle of readers/commenters, but I’m not willing to censor myself to please someone else. (anyway, I do, believe it or not!).
We all have our style and it comes through in our blogs, or I least I suppose it does. Sometimes I’ll write something and it will be read in a different manner than what I meant. Heck, that happens in real life, so imagine while reading. There’s no tone to speak of, and yet at times, we can feel a tone! Sometimes styles collide. There are some blogs I read which never came here, or if they did I didn’t notice. Sometimes it clicks and other times, not so much…Can’t please them all, that’s for sure.

Today, following a discussion, I read this post. That guy says it well. I think he’s right, what do you think?

I'm averaging about 120-130 hits per day for Expo Lounge.

Earlier this spring, with all the media attention given the 40th anniversary of Expo 67, I was averaging over 200 per day...

On being taken the wrong way: When I write as in blog entry I'm inclined to write the way I speak, forgetting I dont have intonation from my voice to help convey the message in any direction. I just basically write from the heart, whereas my other writing I write and rewrite over and over till I dont even rcognise it as something I wrote, of the two I prefer the blog entry; as for the money if it comes that is a bonus, if it does'nt I have the satisfaction money cant bring.

I blog for me. I like having readers. I like getting comments. However, I don't write with thoughts of pleasing the reader. The only thing I have done over time to change because of readers is to try to clarify things better so that I'm understood clearly.

I get about 40 visitors per day, and as I said in a recent post that is about 20 times what I ever thought I would have. I think the most I ever got in one day was around 60.

Like you I value commenters way more than readers. Unfortunately, I have to admit I am not a frequent commenter on the blogs I read so I'm not the type reader that I like to have. Ah, the irony of it all. . .

I think tons of ads on blogs make them look messy, but whatever...I say if you can make lots of money off your blog then go for it. I couldn't so I won't even bother to try.

...I'm sure there are times when I'm taken the wrong way too. I write the way I talk/think and without tone and facial expressions (and with people not knowing you) it's hard sometimes to know if you're understood in context.

If people like your blog, they'll come back...and I like comments as much as the next person, but when it comes down to it, I blog for myself because it's an escape. If people like it, fine...if they don't, oh well.

I had to stop checking my stats so much, as I decided it wasn't really accomplishing anything. I seem to have the same basic little group of readers/commenters, and I'm good with that. (Of course I wouldn't mind some more readers, but I'm not obsessing over it.) I do like checking to see what crazy google searches have landed people on my blog. Wow, people look for crazy shit sometimes!

When I first started blogging I put google ads on my site, and breathlessly awaited the riches. Alas, after 6 months I had racked up a pathetic $3 or $4 and I realized that my little corner of the intertubes was never going to be a cash cow. So rather than worry about whether or not my subject matter is marketable, I simply write what comes to mind, and my dozen or so readers keep coming back. I do love it, though, when people comment, especially when they disagree with me. :-)

I have no idea how many hits I get a day. None. How do you find out? I get about 20 comments, maybe more, maybe less.
I blog whatever pops into my head - scary thought - and I try not to be offensive. If soomeone IS offended by me, then they go elsewhere. Not every blog is appealing to every person.

I used to be envious of how many comments I saw on some blogs, but then I thought that I wouldn't want the responsibility of connecting with them all. I then noticed the uuuugly ads that began to litter some of these places. I don't like that. I think the guy you linked is right-people shouldn't be obligated or directed by other's agendas or ideations.
I like comments because I guess I like being liked, but I still only write for me. I think I would quit if I knew not anyone out there read or cared.
And that's all I have to say about that. :)

Sometimes i look at some peoples blogs and wonder how the hell they get 100+ comments for every post.
But still, I like my little commenting family, and if there were 100+ of you, i wouldnt be able to reply to every one, which would be just rude.

I'm not really looking for hits though (good job, as most of them get sent here from google and then leave immediately) and write my blog as a diary, more than anything. I never saw the point of writing a diary that no one saw, but i wanted to record stuff that happened in my life, so if i blog it, it makes my be more elaborate than ''Went to cinema today'' or something.

Though it would be interesting for just one post for everyone that read the post, they would leave a comment, jsut so i could see just how many people read my durge.

Blogging for money....that would be good. Paid to write garbage every day. My ideal job, that.

jason67: Wow, that's impressive! You're quite the popular blogger, maybe you should do this for money!

stanaxe: Welcome to my blog! I tend to write that way as well, and you made me realise that maybe I tend to forget that typing doesn't convey intonations! Thank you for the comment and hope to read you again soon!

trueself: At least you know it! ;-) I do see in my stats that you do come by even if you don't comment that often... just like I do I suppose!

kim: That's the way to do it! Because you're enjoying it!

lizgwiz: Google searches are really weird/funny/scary sometimes!

marius: So I know what to write next time I'm commenting on your blog! ;-)

biddie: You would find out how many his thru your stats. Do you have a stat meter? It's our blogs so we post what we want! ;-)

wreckless: Who doesn't like to be liked? Please! We all do! But, if you only write for you than you shouldn't care if you have readers or not, now should you?

pigeon: That would be quite rude, indeed! And it sure would be fun, for one day, to "hear" from all the quiet visitors who are landing on our blogs via google searches or else...

i tend to stop reading a blog when they get too many people commenting. i like to read the comments and when there are too many and they all basically say the same things, it bores me and i assume my comment will just be lost in the shuffle anyway.

maybe i'll still stop by and read a post here and there but i definitely stop commenting (like at Mama Drama).

every since you posted about the "hot pepper sex", i figure you aren't a blogger to hold back.

I could care less about traffic and I am such a crappy commenter that I really do not deserve anyone to comment on my blog. I have no idea why I blog- my blog is about nothing. But it is fun for me and really that is what I am in it for. After attending BlogHer this summer I realized the best approach for me is def to just do whatever I feel like doing as long as I never, and I mean ever, take any of this seriously.
the best part of all of this has been meeting and connecting with really great people that I would never have had the opportunity to meet in "real" life.

princess: I LOL when I read your last phrase! Thanks for reminding me! ;-)

monkey: I don't think you're crappy and I'm so with you on the idea that blogging is allowing us to get to know people that maybe we would not have spoken to otherwise...
If you keep blogging I'll keep reading AND commenting! ;-)
